2020 is the year of 5G for Apple, it’s a highlight feature on all four new models. Yes, four models – this year Apple introduced two iPhone 12 models in addition to the two Pros. The new addition to the family is the mini. The iPhone 12 & the 12 mini has a lot going on with their $699 & $799 price point with two huge upgrades. Here’s everything you need to know.
The iPhone 12 & the 12 mini comes at 6.1″ & 5.4″ screen sizes. Both feature a similar yet different design than their predecessor. The sides are now flat just like the iPad Pro and the new iPad Air 4. This new design helps with a smaller form factor. The notch and button placement remains the same, along with the lighting charging port. Both the devices now support IP68 water & dust resistance up to 6 meters for 30 min. There’s a cutout on the right side of the frame which might look like a fingerprint scanner but it’s the 5G antenna. Yes, 5G. All the new iPhones now have 5G across the line. With 5G being said, there’s one more huge upgrade on the 12 & 12 mini which is the new screen.
The iPhone 12 comes with a 6.1″ 1170*2532 resolution & the mini comes with a 5.4″ 1080*2340 resolution. Both devices feature an OLED panel with a peak brightness up to 1200 nits and a 2,000,000:1 contrast ratio. This is a huge upgrade over the 828p IPS LCD screen.
The new OLED panel on the iPhone 12 & 12 mini helps for a smaller bezel all around the display while providing a much better punchier color, deep blacks, higher PPI, Dolby Vision & Truetone support. This upgrade alone makes the iPhone 12 & the 12 mini great successors to the iPhone 11. There’s also this new ‘Ceramic Shield‘ on the front of all devices.
Apple claims this new glass is 4x stronger for drop protection, but we’re gonna have to test that out.
The iPhone 12 & the 12 mini both come with a dual-camera setup with the primary lens being a wide 26mm 12MP f/1.6 with Optical Image Stabilization and the second lens being a 13mm 12MP f/2.4 ultrawide camera with a 120-degree field of view. Both the devices can capture 4k 60fps videos with Dolby Vision HDR and stereo sound recording.
The front-facing camera is a 12MP f/2.2 shooter with video recording capabilities up to 4k 60/1080p 120fps.
All three cameras now support Night Mode.
Probably the most unexpected announcement of today’s event would be MagSafe. MagSafe allows users to magnetically connect a wireless charger, which means no more aligning issues with the charging pad. That’s not all, Apple has also shown us a bunch of new accessories for the MagSafe. There’s this new MagSafe Duo which can charge two devices at once and can be easily pocketable with its foldable design (don’t know why you’d carry a charger in your pocket 😐)
There are some cool magnetic case situations going on with the MagSafe accessory lineup such as the wallet case, the cover case and so so many more.
We all know internal specs don’t really matter for new a new iPhone, but Apple had a lot to talk about their new 6-core A14 Bionic chipset. This is their new 5nm chipset. This new chipset is 50% faster than the industry-leading Apple A13 Bionic chipset. The GPU is also 50% faster with its 4-core design. This new chipset also comes with an 80% faster Neural Engine for machine learning tasks.
For the past few years, the $699 iPhone has been the most selling smartphone of the year. In 2019, the most selling smartphone was the iPhone XR with 46.3 Million sales, and the following year, the iPhone 11 was the most selling smartphone with 36.3 Million sales which is way ahead of the competition. And with the iPhone 12 & the 12 mini, we believe the number of sales will go even higher with its incredible screen, 5g, MagSafe, and the overall deal. Let us know what you think of the new iPhone 12 & 12 mini.
